I'm bro. Charles Holmes, and I would like to take a little time to let you know why I believe that brother William Branham was the last messenger of the church, for god's glory.
My life has been odd...and I have been an 'odd-ball' all of my life.
At the age of 26, I was ordained in the church of god and given my first church to pastor. We tripled in membership in just two years and the work was going good.
At the end of the two years I attended the annual convention which was held in Memphis, Tennessee. The general overseer was introducing some new doctrines in the church. I could not accept some of the things that were being presented.
At a convention meeting, there was another little minister who came with me. He spoke out to the 'general overseer' if he could I ask a question.
He asked, "When I go back to my church, will I have to preach these same things that you have told us were the "truth"?
The overseer said ďwhen you go back to your church you will preach exactly what this general assembly tells you to preachĒ.
I looked over to my right to this pastor who had come with me to the convention and was sitting beside me. I told him, "I am through with this church".
I said, "When a man tells me that he can change the bible, and we have to go along with it, that's more than I can take". So I went independent.
The new church did well and I pastored there for 13 years.
I had a radio program on sun. Morning and was on the subject of "the seed of the serpent, and the seed of the woman".
One day a brother came by and knocked on the door. He asked me if I pastored the church there and I said yes.
He asked, "are you the one that has the radio program and teaching on the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman?" .And I said, "I am".
He said, "I want to ask you another question: have you ever meet or heard of a man by the name of William Branham?Ē I said "no sir", he said, "are you sure?".. I said "I am sure". He said, "I want to tell you something, and if you donít understand it please donít say anything against it". He said, "William Branham is a prophet"...and I thought ...uh oh! But I didnít say anything. He said, "I have a tape here of one of his messages if you would like to hear it?"
I didnít want to be rude, so I said, "yes Iíll listen". Right there was where my life was changed. The name of that message was ďAbrahamís royal seedĒ.
I went out in the church and took the tape player which was the old reel-to-reel type. I set it on the altar and sat down and started the tape.
I would stop the tape and fuss awhile, and then I would cry awhile, until about 11 o'clock in the night.
I was hearing things that I had never heard.
I went into the house and my wife said, "Well what do you think?"
I said, "Either that is the greatest preacher I have ever heard in my life or he is the greatest deceiver ....! I donít know".
I studied the message for about three weeks and found out that he was right in the word, so I knew then that I was not right in my doctrine.
The brother came back by one day to get the tape and he asked what I thought about it, and if I would like to hear another one. I didnít want to act too happy about it but I sure did want to hear another tape.
The one he left this time was ďmy guideĒ.
I went out in my study and started listening, I remember I fell on my face and cried to the lord Jesus and said, ďLord I donít have what that man has but I sure do want it!"
After studying that message I went off and shut myself in a room for 4 days without food or water and asked the lord to take everything out of me that I had been taught that was not right. I said let me be like a little baby and learn all over again.
I still had not told my church about this, and the brother came back with some more of the tapes. I left one on the recorder one day in my living room and went out on a call. One of my deacons came in and turned on the tape where Brother Branham was saying that a woman couldnít handle or preach the word. Boy that did it! ... They called a meeting and brought me before the church. They said that I had left the word on the "godhead". I tried to show them in the bible but they would not accept it. They put me out of the church.
I was living in the parish itself and now I had nowhere to go.
I had to first find a job so I started running a laundry-route.
I was out in all kinds of weather and came down with pneumonia.
I almost died. I had not been baptized yet in the name of the lord Jesus Christ and I prayed for the lord to let me live to get baptized.
We had not had a doctor in over 13 years. We trusted god for healing. It seemed that god would not hear me and I was getting worse, my temperature was so high that my hair started coming out. My wife said, "if you donít get something done, you are going to leave me with these 6 children to raise".
I let her call the doctor. When he came, he said, "You will have to go to the hospital". I said, "I might die but I wonít go to the hospital". I got down to 130 lb.... But I was finally able to get out of bed.
Then in March of 1963, Brother Branham came in for the seven seals, I was still sick. I told my doctor that I was going to Jeffersonville for a meeting, and he told me if I did, I probably would take this all over again and I wouldnít make it this time.
I went to Jeffersonville. Anyway, and got in there on Monday morning and Brother Branham was to preach the "first seal" that night. I went straight to the tabernacle that morning and brother Neville was there. I said, "brother I want to be baptized right now!". He said, "The pool is ready", so I went in and was baptized in the name of our lord Jesus Christ.
Listening to the seals was wonderful.
I had never heard anything like that in my life, and nobody else had.
On Sunday morning Brother Branham prayed for the sick.
(while I was in military service on the front line in Germany my feet had frozen, and I almost lost them. I was told by two doctors after I got out of military service that I would be in a wheel chair by the time I was 40. I had arthritis in both legs).
As the prayer line went on, just as clear as you could speak, something said, "Go up and you will be healed". As I passed by Brother Branham, he just laid his hand on me and said "lord heal my brother". That was in 1963, and this is 2005... And I have never had another pain in my legs since!
Brother Branham was in Shreveport, Louisiana, in a meeting later on in December. '63, and I was going out to be in the meetings. My mother was 79 at that time and she said, "son, tell Brother Branham to pray for Ben", my brother. He was an alcoholic.
I got in too late to give in the request which I had in my pocket.
Brother Branham preached: _just once more lord_. At the end of the service he called out a man that had his nephew and told him what was wrong with him.
A brother that came with me to the meetings was sitting beside me, and he had a request in his pocket for Brother Branham to pray for his family that they might be saved. Brother Branham said "there is a man setting back there that is praying for his family to be saved, he is not from here he is from South Carolina, and his name is Mr. Dixon". I thought ..."oh so close!", and just then, Brother Branham turned around and said, "by the way there is another man sitting there and he has caught fire.. See that light over his head? And he is also from South Carolina, his name is Brother Holmes and he is praying for a brother thatís an alcoholic. If that is so will you stand to your feet". He said, "You will have it".
I did! He was healed! :-
ĒHere's a man setting right here, looking right at me. He's praying for his family. He's really not from here. He's from South Carolina: Mr. Dixon. But if he'll just believe with all of his heart, god will grant that blessing to him. Do you believe it, sir? I'm a total stranger to him. I never seen him in my life, amen. I never seen him in my life. But you see what I mean? What is it? "How does that work, Brother Branham?" when Brother Branham can get out of the way. Yes, sir. When I can get out of the way, then Jesus Christ comes in. Just by the way, right over from him, is another man caught fire, and he's from South Carolina too. That's right. I see it hanging right over him. That's exactly right. He's praying for a brother that's an alcoholic. That's exactly right. Listen. You're Brother Holmes. Do you believe that god... Is that your name? God makes... God will grant it to you. Do you see what I mean? "once more, lord, once more."Ē [Just Once more Lord, Shreveport Louisiana, 63-1201E]
Then, in 1964 July, I had three questions on my heart that I felt Brother Branham could answer - if I could see him. He had over 600 on his list for interviews and I was not one of them. I went out to the tabernacle and stood at the door before daylight, waiting for brother Neville to come. When he did I said, "Brother, I am Brother Holmes and I need to see the prophet for about 5 minutes"... He said "the devil would like to get in to the prophet".. I said, "But I believe that I will see him".
He said, "I canít help you, but I will tell Billy Paul that you are here and that you want to see Brother Branham.. He is the only one that can help".
That night after service I was standing out side of the tabernacle talking to some brethren, and Billy Paul came around and said does any one out here know Brother Holmes? One of the brethren spoke up and said, "Here he is". He came over and said to me, "Brother Holmes dad will be here this week giving interviews but he has so many and he won't see you unless god shows him something for you".
All the brothers said, "Brother Holmes youíve come this far, donít leave now".
I said, "I am not going to leave".
The next morning my wife and I went over to a friend of ours and we were playing the tape that Brother Branham had preached on Sunday morning. The phone rang and it was Billy Paul. He asked if the brother knew where I was. He said, "He is here!" he said, "let me speak with him". I liked to faint.
He said "Brother Holmes dad wants to see you and your wife at 11 0 clock, and it will be a short interview".
We (my wife and I) went in at 11 o clock sharp and met with bro. Branham.
The three questions that I had, Brother Branham took them in order and answered every one of them. He took his time and talked at length.
After he had answered all of those questions, another question came to my mind about the evidence of the Holy Ghost, and I said, "I have another question Brother Branham". He said, "Alright". When I told him that I had been listening to a message and praying for an answer about the true evidence and it seemed so clear that the evidence is believing the word for your day. He said, "that is nothing but the truth". And he talked with us a little on that subject.
After this he said to me, "Brother Holmes when you go back to your ministry, donít light the candle in the middle... Light it on the top and as it burns down it will give light to the house".
Then he dismissed us, and we walked out at 11:55, - after 55 mins. And brother Billy Paul was shaking his head and saying "I canít believe it", but it was true.
The family had gone to Birmingham, Alabama, to hear Brother Branham.
My oldest daughter and her husband had been married for 3 years and had no children. They had been to the doctor to see what was wrong, but he said he could not find anything.
In this meeting Diana got a prayer card and at the last meeting, Brother Branham was in a discerning service. He called out a number of people, and he looked at my daughter and said, "You have a prayer card and you want to be prayed for". He said, "Your problem is female trouble but itís alright". 11 months later she had a fine baby boy.
Ē do you believe that, sir, setting right there with that gray-looking suit on, setting right back there looking at me? You believe that? Then your nervousness left you. I never seen the man in my life. Are we strangers, one to another, sir? That's right. That's what you're suffering with. That you might know, me being a servant of god, the woman setting next to you is suffering with stomach trouble. That's right. You believe it? Raise up your hand that you believe you're healed. Just have faith. The woman setting next to her's got heart trouble. You believe that, that god will heal you? All right, sir if you believe it, you can have it. One setting next to her has female trouble. You believe that god will heal you? ď[Court Trial, Birmingham AL, 64-0412]
I am a witness of these things and I know that he had no way to know these things unless god told him. I could go on and on, but I will stop now trusting that you all will accept this to be the truth and nothing but the truth.
